During the Three Kingdoms period the Empire was split into three large area, Wei to the North, Shu to the West and South West and Wu to the South. Great strides forward in irrigation technology were made but the period was of one of destruction and devastation. Buddhism became a major religion but Daoism was re-vitalised too.
Chinese people will often use a deep knowledge of history to draw analogies to events as far back as the Three Kingdoms period. This was well documented even at the time of the Japanese occupation and civil war (1937-1949).
