Although Fujian is a coastal province like neighbouring Guangdong and Zhejiang, it is not quite as prosperous although Fujian has always been involved in trade from its seaports. It has many rugged mountains inland overlooking the large island of Taiwan. It is famous for its quality teas.

The Nationalist government of Taiwan still occupy the small islands of Quemoy and Matsu located a few miles from the coast of Fujian.
