If you think of China, you no doubt think of the large continental land area and forget that there is one large island province at the far South of the country.

Hainan is the smallest non-metropilitan province, but even so is twice the size of Israel. Surrounded by tropical seas it has abundant rainfall and heavily farmed. The proximity to Vietnam led to the setting up of many naval bases along the Eastern coast. It has a high number of ethnic minorities especially the Li and Miao people. The coastal resort of Sanya is a busy port and popular tropical beach resort. The island commanded world attention in 2001 over the 'Spy Plane Incident'
