Situated bestride the Yellow River as it passes through the rich agricultural plains in central China, Henan has many claims to be the centre of the Middle Kingdom (ZhongGuo). Some of the earliest national capitals are situated within the province: Kaifeng and Luoyang so it has huge historical riches for the tourist.
It boasts the Longmen Grottoes, full of Buddhist sculptures and the Shaolin monastery well known to followers of kung fu and Tai Chi.
