The long border with North Korea to the South East has many mountains and forests. To the North West Jilin Province merges into the north China plain and Mongolia. The northerly location brings long cold winters and it boasts some ski resorts.
On 26th November 1950 over 250,000 Chinese troops (People's Volunteers) crossed the Yalu River to defend North Korea from the U.N. forces in South Korea.
