The character combines elements of 'sheep' and 'mature person' to form a well proportioned character for someone with mild and gentle disposition. Just as in the case of 'ying' there is a national interest too. The Chinese have transliterated the first part of 'America' as 'mei' and so 'mei guo' is America.
