Placed beyond the Great Wall and on the Southern fringes of the Gobi Desert, Inner Mongolia (or NeiMongol) province feels more relationship with Mongolia (Outer Mongolia) than the rest of China to its South. Populated by nomadic mongols who have periodically invaded and ruled China over the centuries the province is a border or buffer zone.

The desert sands in the South and West are hot in Summer but bitterly cold in Winter with snow. Most of the inhabited areas are in the narrow valley of the Yellow River (Huang He) as it loops its way North and then South.
