Gallery | 22 : Jingdezhen Blue Tableware

Underglazed Jingdezhen blue tableware. This form of porcelain is one of Jingdezhen's traditional products. Production started in the Yuan Dynasty (1279-1368). The process starts with painting the base with pure blue pigment which is then covered with transparent glaze, finally it is put in the kiln and baked at high temperatures.

After a period of damaging civil strife, a new factory was built in 1682. The famous blue and white porcelain was prized the world over. This made the Jiangxi province extremely rich and prosperous employing many thousands, if not millions, of workers in the porcelain industry during the eighteenth century. At its peak there were thousands of kilns producing china of all types. The widespread use of quality 'china' led to the goods being named after the country they came from.
