Bamboo groves thrive in the Huachiang People's Commune, Xingan County, Guangxi Province , thanks to scientific cultivation on a massive scale in recent years (picture dated 1976). From 1969 to 1976 the commune delivered 800,000 bamboos each year.

Bamboo in the southern provinces grows extremely quickly and is a very versatile timber, even though bamboo is botanically a grass rather than a tree.
