Meishan is associated with the three literary members of the Su family : Suxun; Sushi (Su Dongpo) and Suzhe. These are known as the three great father-and-son writers in one family . These three were among the eight greatest poets of the Tang and Song Dynasties.

Since the Tang Dynasty, poets, scholars and other talented people have come from Meishan. During 317 years of the North Song Dynasty, more than 880 Imperial candidate graduates came from Meishan.
