Wuxi is an industrial and resort city on the north bank of Lake Tai (Tai Hu), one of China's five largest lakes. Important as a transportation junction, Wuxi is situated astride the Grand Canal linking Beijing with Hangzhou and also along the Nanjing-Shanghai railway line. Wuxi has a population of about 4.3 million. The original name of the city was Youxi, which translated means "has tin". This referred to the local tin mines first worked in the Zhou Dynasty (about 1066 BC to 221 BC) when the tin resource ran out during the Han Dynasty (206 BC to 220 AD), the name was changed to Wuxi ("without tin").
