Shanghai has a rich historical past and is the principal city of southern China, in fact it vies with Beijing in many ways for premier city status. Strategically placed near the mouth of the mighty Yangzi (Changjiang) River it has for long been the main gateway for trade into central China. Famous as a cosmopolitan trading centre in the 1920s and 1930s with large foreign trading settlements it has now re-emerged as a major industrial and business centre. It is developing very quickly and pulls in many migrant workers from the rural hinterland. There are many buildings of historical interest including those on the world famous 'Bund' (a name imported by the British by way of India).
